5 Essential Winter Car Maintenance Tips Every Driver Should Follow

Winter brings fog, cold starts, and slippery roads. A little preparation now can save you from breakdowns and costly repairs later. Here are five essential maintenance tasks to get your car winter-ready.

1. Get the battery tested

Cold weather reduces a battery’s cranking power, and a weak battery is the most common cause of winter breakdowns. Have a mechanic or battery shop run a load test. If the battery is more than three to four years old, consider replacing it before the coldest weeks arrive. Keep the terminals clean and tightly connected.

2. Check tyres and pressure

Tyre pressure drops roughly one PSI for every 10°C fall in temperature. Under-inflated tyres reduce grip and increase fuel consumption. Inflate all four tyres (and the spare) to the pressure listed on the driver-side door sticker. Inspect tread depth — if it is near the wear indicator, replace the tyres before wet and foggy roads make matters worse.

3. Top up coolant and antifreeze

Your engine’s coolant does two jobs: it stops overheating and prevents freezing. Check the level in the reservoir and top it up with the correct premixed coolant recommended by your carmaker. Never mix different coolant colours, and never use plain water, which can corrode the cooling system.

4. Replace wiper blades and washer fluid

Fog and light rain make clear visibility critical. Worn wipers leave streaks right when you need them most. Replace blades that chatter or smear, and fill the washer reservoir with a winter-grade fluid that does not freeze on the windscreen.

5. Test all lights, especially fog lamps

Shorter days and dense fog mean you will rely on headlamps and fog lights more often. Walk around the car and check low beam, high beam, indicators, brake lights, and both fog lamps. Clean the lenses and replace any dim or flickering bulb.

A quick checklist before winter sets in:

  • Battery load-tested and terminals clean
  • Tyres at correct pressure with healthy tread
  • Coolant and washer fluid topped up
  • Wipers and all lights working

Thirty minutes of preventive care now can keep you safe and on the road all season long.
