Car Dashboard Warning Lights: What the Colours Mean and When to Act
That glowing symbol on your dashboard isn’t decoration — it’s your car’s way of talking to you. Ignoring it can turn a small fix into an expensive breakdown. Here’s how to read the signals.
The colour code
Most cars use a simple traffic-light system:
- Red — stop as soon as it’s safe. Something critical is wrong.
- Amber/yellow — get it checked soon, but you can usually keep driving.
- Green or blue — just information; a system is active, like high beams or fog lamps.
Lights you should never ignore
Engine check light (amber). This covers everything from a loose fuel cap to a sensor fault. If it’s steady, book a service within a few days. If it’s flashing, pull over — that usually means an engine misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.
Oil pressure (red). Stop immediately and switch off. Low oil pressure can wreck the engine in minutes. Check the dipstick once the engine cools, and top up only if you’re confident.
Temperature warning (red). This signals overheating. Pull over, switch off, and let the engine cool before touching anything. Never open the radiator cap while it’s hot.
Battery / charging (red or amber). The alternator isn’t charging properly. You may have limited driving range before the battery drains — head to a workshop promptly.
Brake warning (red). Could mean the handbrake is on, brake fluid is low, or there’s a genuine brake fault. Check the handbrake first, then the fluid level. If both look fine, don’t drive.
ABS (amber). Your brakes still work normally, but the anti-lock assist is off. Get it diagnosed, especially before wet-weather driving.
Tyre pressure (amber, TPMS). One or more tyres are under-inflated. Inflate to the recommended pressure and check for punctures.
Quick checklist
- Red light while moving? Find a safe place to stop.
- Amber light? Finish your trip, then book a service.
- Take a photo of any warning light before visiting the mechanic — it saves diagnostic time.
- Your owner’s manual is the fastest, most accurate reference for your specific model.
A few seconds of attention now can save you thousands of rupees and a breakdown on the highway.
