How to File a Car Insurance Claim in India: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Stay safe and document the damage

After an accident or collision, the first step is to ensure everyone is safe. Move the car to a safe spot if possible, turn on the hazard lights, and check for injuries. Then document everything: take clear photos and videos of the damage, the accident site, and the other vehicle’s number plate. If another party is involved, note their name, contact details, insurance details, and driving licence number. File a police FIR for major accidents, theft, or third-party injury — you will need it for the claim.

Step 2: Inform your insurer promptly

Most insurers expect you to notify them within 24 to 48 hours of the incident. Call the helpline or use the insurer’s app to register the claim and get a claim reference number. Delaying can lead to the claim being questioned or rejected, so report early even if the damage looks minor.

Step 3: Choose cashless or reimbursement

  • Cashless: Get the car repaired at a network garage; the insurer settles the bill directly with the garage. You pay only the deductibles and depreciation.
  • Reimbursement: Repair at any garage of your choice, pay the bill, then submit receipts and documents to claim back the amount.

Cashless is usually faster and involves less paperwork if a network garage is nearby.

Step 4: Submit the documents

Keep these ready: claim form, copy of the insurance policy, driving licence, vehicle RC, FIR (if applicable), photos of the damage, and the repair estimate. For reimbursement, add the original repair invoice and payment receipt.

Step 5: Survey and repair

The insurer appoints a surveyor to assess the damage and approve the repair estimate. Once approved, the garage proceeds with the repairs. Ask for a timeline and track the status through the app or helpline.

Step 6: Settlement

After repairs, review the final bill and deductibles (compulsory and voluntary). For cashless claims the insurer pays the garage directly; for reimbursement, the amount is credited to your account within a few days to a couple of weeks.

Quick tips

  • Do not delay reporting the incident.
  • Do not accept cash settlements from the other party without informing your insurer.
  • Keep a digital copy of all documents.
  • Know your deductibles and depreciation so there are no surprises.
