New Car Delivery Checklist: What to Inspect Before You Sign

The day your new car arrives is exciting, but it is also your last realistic chance to catch defects before they become your problem. A careful pre-delivery inspection (PDI) takes twenty to thirty minutes and can save weeks of warranty follow-up later.

Before You Arrive

  • Carry your booking receipt, the exact variant name you ordered, and any written accessory or offer promises.
  • Confirm the final on-road price breakup and keep the quotation handy to cross-check the invoice.

Exterior Checks

Walk around the car in daylight, not under showroom lighting.

  • Paint: look for scratches, swirl marks, or a colour mismatch between panels, especially the bumpers.
  • Panel gaps: doors, bonnet, and boot should sit evenly with consistent gaps.
  • Tyres: all four should be the same brand and spec. Check the manufacturing week on the sidewall so you do not get old stock.
  • Lights: test headlights, indicators, brake and reverse lights, and fog lamps.

Interior and Features

  • Odometer: a new car should usually read well under 100 km, though slightly more is acceptable if it was driven from a distant stockyard.
  • Upholstery: check seats, dashboard, and roof lining for stains, tears, or loose trim.
  • Electronics: test the infotainment, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors, wipers, and reverse camera one by one.
  • Match the VIN: the chassis number on the dashboard and door sticker must match your invoice and, later, the registration certificate.

Under the Bonnet and Paperwork

  • Fluids: verify engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and washer fluid levels.
  • Battery: confirm the terminals are clean and tight.
  • Documents: check the invoice, insurance policy (with correct engine and chassis numbers), road tax receipt, and delivery note. Collect the owner’s manual, warranty booklet, spare key, and the jack and tool kit.

Drive Before You Sign

Take a short loop around the dealership to check the brakes, steering, and for any unusual noise. If anything feels off, ask the dealer to fix it on the spot or note it on the delivery challan.

A slow, checklist-driven delivery is normal and good dealers expect it. Do not sign the delivery note until you are fully satisfied, because that signature confirms you received the car in good condition.
