Rapido Bike Taxi Banned Again in Pune After FIR
The Rapido bike-taxi service is back in the crosshairs in Pune. District Collector Jitendra Dudi has written to Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, seeking removal of the bike-taxi booking option from Rapido’s mobile app.
Why the crackdown
- An FIR has been filed against Rapido over allegations of running bike taxis without the necessary licences and permissions.
- Pune police have separately asked Google and Apple to remove the Rapido app from their stores.
- Rickshaw unions had earlier given authorities an 8-day deadline to act against unauthorised bike taxis.
The larger dispute
Bike taxis remain a grey area across India. While states like Karnataka and Telangana have framed rules to allow them, Maharashtra has not granted permission, and authorities have repeatedly ordered Rapido and rivals to stop operations in cities like Pune.
For commuters, the tussle means an uncertain service — and a reminder that ride-hailing apps must hold valid state permits to operate legally. Until Maharashtra notifies a clear policy, bike taxis in Pune remain effectively banned.
